An alcoholic drifter spends Halloween in his hometown of Albany, New York, after returning there for the first time in decades. Albany, New York, Halloween, 1938. Francis Phelan and Helen Archer are bums in their hometown. She was a singer on the radio, he was a major league pitcher. Death surrounds her: she is sick, a buddy has cancer, he digs graves in the cemetery and visits the grave of his little son, whom he dropped; Visions of his past haunt him, including the ghosts of two men he has killed. That night, Helen tries to sing while drinking in a bar. The next day, Fran visits his wife and children and meets a grandson. He could stay, but decide it's not for him. Helen gets her things from the warehouse and finds a hotel. Amid their mistakes and misconduct, the film examines their code of fairness and loyalty.
